When you come to Steamboat, you can go to some club-like restaurant that you found on Open Table and which require reservations, or you can pretend you aren’t in New York/Chicago/LA and actually came all the way to Steamboat , CO and have some amazing food, served by awesome locals like Robert, in the coolest throwback atmosphere around.
I personally come to Steamboat for Steamboat, not skiing all day with big city ego, stress, and pretense in the town afterward. Backdoor Grill delivered. The bread is non GMO, the meat is local grass-fed, and the fries are hand cut. I have had burgers all over the world and all across this country, and I can honestly say the G6 (on Bison with bacon) was the best burger I’ve ever eaten- I want to go full glutton and have 3 of them tonight. Robert was the coolest, most laid back server and was more on top of his game and knew his restaurant and menu better than what I’ve experienced in a number of “fancy” restaurants I’ve been to. To complete the experience, the atmosphere and music was perfect after a day skiing when I was looking to have some good food, relax, and be able to have a conversation without yelling.
To sum it up, if you just want to ski in Colorado then go pretend you’re back in the city, go make a reservation at one of the developer restaurants that replaced places like Backdoor. If you want to actually SKI in Colorado and experience Steamboat as it was meant to be experienced, Backdoor is the place to be. Just make sure you leave the ego (and the noise) outside.
